Adut Akech, The South Sudanese-Australian model is the talk of the town. Since making her runway debut at Saint Laurent’s spring/summer 2017 show during Paris Fashion Week, she has been sweeping the industry. Not bad for a debut, huh?
Although, Adut had only participated in local events up until that point, including one sponsored by her aunt when she was only 13 years old. She knew she wanted to be a professional model from the moment she was cast in her first significant fashion show at the age of 16, and her ambition came true.
Who is Adut Akech?
Adut Akech, 22, is a South Sudanese runway model who grew up in Kenya and sought refugee status in Australia when she was seven years old. Teachers often had difficulty pronouncing her name, so she went by the name Mary, but in the fashion world, she prefers to go by her birth name, Adut.
Is Adut Akech in a relationship?
Adut appears to be single – she was dating Nigerian singer Runtown, but she confirmed on her Instagram Stories in July last year that the couple had broken up and that she was single.
How was she discovered?
Adut Akech was scouted several times in her early adolescence, but it wasn’t until she was 16 that she was cast in her first major show, Saint Laurent’s spring/summer 2017 collection, and signed with Elite Model Management.
She has modeled for a number of high-end fashion houses, including Miu Miu, Bottega Veneta, Alexander McQueen, Jil Sander, and Versace, to name a few. She has appeared on the cover of British Vogue twice, once in December 2018 and again in February 2022.
Adut Akech and Naomi Campbell‘s friendship
Adut is known to be close friends with Naomi Campbell, whom the 22-year-old described as “like a second mother” in a 2019 interview with Grazia. The pair met in 2017 during the Pirelli calendar shoot, and Naomi has been on the lookout for her ever since.
“She told me she was proud of me and predicted I’d become a star. I traveled to France shortly after that show for my first full Paris Fashion Week schedule, and she was constantly checking in on me. Who better to look after you than Naomi Campbell?” Adut stated.
“When I moved to New York I’d go to her apartment, and we’d have lunch or dinner. She would give me so much advice. Since then, our relationship has just grown and grown. She was the first family I had in New York.”
What has Adut Akech Been up to recently?
The 23-year-old was recently busy killing it at the 2022 Fashion Awards last month. Adut stunned in her custom Nensi Dojaka ensemble, which included a strapless boned corset with cut-out cup detailing and a semi-sheer chiffon maxi train skirt.
Celebrating her Model of the Year nomination (which she lost to Bella Hadid), Adut looked like a sultry snow queen in her incredible ensemble, which she topped with Tasaki diamonds.
